Located to the south west of London alongside the River Thames this county has become a commuter suburb for many of the more affluent of London's workers. There are still many picturesque villages such as Godalming but the spread of urban development has to be controlled by rigid Greenbelt laws to protect the remaining countryside.
Much of the land is still farmed and many cereal crops and vegetables are grown but the close proximity to the Capital together with a network of excellent transportation links has meant that there has been rapid growth in light industry and the service industry in towns such as Guilford and Croydon. The area is served by the UK's second largest airport at Gatwick.
