Introducing Shetland
|
Located some 130 miles north of the Scottish mainland this group of approximately 100 sparsely populated but beautiful islands has Mainland as it's largest island and the home of it's council in the town of Lerwick. The islands also feature the northernmost part of the British Isles in the Muckle Flugga lighthouse.
Traditionally the residents of the island have survived by farming small homesteads known as crofts which consist of a few acres of arable land together with the right to graze sheep on the less fertile common land. Although the wool is of fine quality, thanks largely to necessity on the part on the sheep in this cold and windswept climate the islanders need to supplement this income with other jobs such as those provided by the North Sea oil fields. Naturally, fishing is still important on the islands for both income and food but this is declining due to competition from overseas.
