Located in the Atlantic Ocean off north west Scotland this area was formed FROM parts of two previous counties in Ross and Cromarty and Inverness when the areas were reorganised in 1975. This desolate area has Stornaway as the seat for it's council.
Tourism is very important in this region taking full advantage of the natural environment. A wide variety of pursuits are available including climbing, hill walking and some excellent sea and freshwater fishing.
