Introducing Orkney
|
Located approximately 20 miles north of the Scottish mainland this group of roughly 70 islands is less remote than the other island groups found in Scotland and was well positioned to take advantage of the discovery of oil in the North Sea. The land here is also better suited to farming and the islands produce beef and dairy products among others. Because of these advantages sea fishing is less prevalent than may be expected of a group of islands but trout fishing is good in the region.
The main island of the group is sensibly called Mainland on which Kirkwall, the chief administrative town of the region is located. There are good air connections available from here to both the oil fields and the Scottish mainland. There are also regular ferry crossings.
