Located in the south of Wales this county has suffered mixed fortunes in it's history. The coalfields of the region were once essential to a wide range of industries but their decline has been impossible to arrest and attempts to replace them have proved difficult. The areas suffer from falling populations and high unemployment.
By contrast, towards the south of the area there has been substantial growth, largely along the 'M4 corridor' with many light and modern industries benefiting from good links with London and other markets. The close proximity of Cardiff is also a benefit thanks to massive investment in the region. There is also a renewed sense of national pride as indicated by the newly elected Welsh Assembly.
