Introducing Highlands
Located in the north of mainland Scotland, Highland is a hybrid of many other counties and was formed in 1975. This area includes some of the remotest parts of mainland Scotland and is popular with tourists for this very reason.

Towns such as Inverness do support a fairly considerable industrial base alongside the tourist industry and there is a good train line with other areas of the United Kingdom. North of Inverness however there are only infrequent bus services.

Area. 9,806 square miles (25,398 square km).
Pop. (1991 prelim.) 209,419.
