Located in the north west of Wales this region has retained much of it's 'Welshness' in that the Welsh language is both spoken and taught in many schools and there has been hostility in the past to English 'invaders' buying second homes in the region. This may in part be due to the remoteness of certain areas within the region as the spectacular mountain range of Snowdonia forming a natural barrier to invaders. However, it is this remoteness which now makes many areas so popular with tourists who flock there to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities or to soak up the scenery.
Many farmers, who have struggled to maintain their often uneconomical and uncompetitive fields have diversified into tourism or 'sold up' although the populous regions of the north west of England do provide a market for milk and vegetables grown in the region. The city of Bangor, just over the Menai Straits from Anglesey has a reputable university and is one of the major conurbation’s in the region.
