Located in Strathclyde on the banks of the River Clyde in south west Scotland, Glasgow has long been Scotlands second city and is more concerned with industry than it's white collar neighbour, Edinburgh.
Glasgow expanded rapidly with the commencement of the industrial revolution and was predominantly concerned with heavy industry including shipbuilding. Being relatively remote from mainland Europe and other important markets Glasgow has struggled to prosper for many years. The city became known for its inadequate housing and many of its inhabitants were moved to new towns to ease the burden on slum areas.
Recent investment has seen something of a turnaround in Glasgows fortunes with much redevelopment and investment, much of it funded by the European Union. Tourism is also on the increase with many people flocking to enjoy the revitalised nighlife and art scene including the Burrell Collection.
