Located in east Scotland and created in 1975 this region has the North Sea to the east and the Firth of Forth to the south. Some coalfields are found here and much of the land sustains a wide range of agricultural pursuits.
The farming is largely confined to the north east of the region with the south west being more concerned with light industry. Much of the farming is of root crops although cattle farming is also prevalent.
The coalfields have suffered, as elsewhere in the United Kingdom, due to cheap foreign imports but the region has successfully diversified into more modern industries such as electronics which exist alongside more traditional concerns such as shipbuilding.
