Located in south west Scotland and created in 1975 this region features the most southerly point in Scotland which is marked by a lighthouse on the Rinns. Dumfries as its major town. The economy is largely based on dairy and cattle farming most notably Galloway cattle which are farmed on the lowlands. The town of Dumfries is also a major centre for the buying and selling of cattle in the region. Forestry is also important with large areas having been replanted with a view to establishing a paper industry in the region.
Tourism is also important with the areas most famous son being Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, who lived in Dumfries and is now buried there. His home is a popular museum but many visitors come to enjoy the outdoors with walking and fishing holidays.
