Introducing Dumfries & Galloway
Located in south west Scotland and created in
1975 this region features the most southerly point
in Scotland which is marked by a lighthouse on
the Rinns. Dumfries as its major town. The economy
is largely based on dairy and cattle farming most
notably Galloway cattle which are farmed on the
lowlands. The town of Dumfries is also a major
centre for the buying and selling of cattle in
the region. Forestry is also important with large
areas having been replanted with a view to establishing
a paper industry in the region.
Tourism is also important with the areas most
famous son being Robert Burns, the Scottish poet,
who lived in Dumfries and is now buried there.
His home is a popular museum but many visitors
come to enjoy the outdoors with walking and fishing
holidays.
