Introducing Isle of Wight
Initially treated as a part of Hampshire the
Isle of Wight is now recognised as a county in
it's own right. Seperated from Hampshire by The
Solent it lies off the south coast of England
and is connected by flight and ferry.
The island has prospered through tourism which centres on
the coastal resorts such as Yarmouth and Cowes, the latter
of which is also renowned as a popular yachting port. The
mild weather also allows for the growing of fruit and vegetables.
Other related industries such as boatbuilding also prosper
alongside more modern industries.
Area. 147 square miles (381 square km).
Pop. (1991 prelim.) 126,600.
